We will visit Burgos on Saturday. In case that the students stay two or three weeks, other excursions nearby places will be organized for the rest of Saturdays.

Sunday is a free day so that the student can go on another optional trip on his/her own. For example, we suggest visiting Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santander, Valladolid, Madrid…

BURGOS

Burgos, the area where the historic origins of Castille developed and where the castillian language was born, is a province bursting with incomparable and the most beautiful examples of our artistic and cultural heritage.

The city of Burgos, at only 50 kms from Aguilar de Bureba, dates from 884 AD when Count Diego Rodriguez Porcelos began apace to repopulate the area between the mountains of the north towards the plains of the Central Plateau.

The Cathedral and the Monastery of Las Huelgas will be two of the unmissable attractions of this wonderfully interesting city.

BILBAO

Bilbao, capital of the province of Vizcaya (Biscay) and part of the autonomous community of the Pais Vasco (the Basque Country), is a destination not to be missed.

It is just 125 kms from Aguilar de Bureba.

Although it cannot boast of the centuries of antiquity of other Spanish cities, its great architectural and infrastructure projects have served as an engine for the urban and economic regeneration of the city. The Guggenheim Museum, the Palacio de Congresos and the Euskaduna Conference Centre, the Metro of Norman Foster, the airport of Santiago Calatrava, the towers designed by the architects Arata Isozaki and Cesar Pelli are examples of the irresistible vitality which breathes in Bilbao.聽聽If you would like to go deeper into the history of Bilbao we recommend you visit this web page:聽聽聽:聽http://www.villadebilbao.net/

MADRID

Madrid has quadrupled in size over the last 50 years, but despite its size now the principal places聽of interest are concentrated in an area which can be covered on foot.

Obviously, in just one day it is only possible to get some idea of the great cultural, artistic, gastronomic riches which Madrid possesses. In just 500 metres are found three of the great museums: The Prado,聽the Reina (Queen) Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza.

Walking around Madrid confirms why it is called the city of a thousand faces.聽聽In the facades of its buildings practically every architectural style can be admired, from the rich and ostentatious structures of old 16th century Madrid to the modern skyscrapers which are found along the Paseo de la Castellana.

The bars of Madrid alone constitute a chapter of their own. And within that there are those famous and classic taverns which appeared in the first half of the 19th century, of which only about 100 remain. Although each one is unique they share similar characteristics, such as the large clock presiding over a bar of carved wood and zinc, and the glasses positioned with filtered water running continuously. The tables are of marble and the interior walls are usually lined with glazed tiles.

LA BUREBA

The region of La Bureba 鈥 鈥渢he heart of the land of Burgos鈥, as Azorin called it 鈥 is an area formed by a great cereal-producing plain surrounded by mountain ranges.

We will visit two of its main and most beautiful towns: Frias and O帽a.

COVARRUBIAS Y SILOS

Covarrubias, so named because of the numerous caves of reddish colour which are found near the old centre, was head of one of the most important monastic domains from the tenth century. It represents one of the best examples of Castilian architecture. It was declared a joint National Historic-Artistic treasure in 1965.

A visit to the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos will put us in contact with the monastic spirit of the Middle Ages.聽聽Its spectacular double-storey cloister stands out the ower being the more ancient and of greater merit (11th century).
